Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB)

Back to Support

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) provides support to blind and partially sighted people across the UK to live the lives they want to.

What to expect

People can expect support with living with a visual impairment, whatever that might be. All RNIB services are free including:

  • talking books
  • support advice and guidance from their Tech for Life team
  • support advice and guidance from their employment team
  • one-to-one remote counselling (formal talking therapy with qualified counsellors for people with sight loss)
  • and more! See their website

The Peterborough branch also runs a quarterly meeting from the RNIB office in Northminster House called the Peterborough VI Forum, which brings together local blind and partially sighted people and organisations who provide groups, activities and services for local visually impaired people. At each Forum they have two speakers from an organisation who can update on their services and take questions from the floor. The meetings are hybrid, so some people are in the room and some online. Past speakers include CamSight, people from local police community teams, Stagecoach bus service, LNER train company, people from local council licensing authority teams, and so on. Hot drinks are free. There are also snacks that are bought in with a suggested donation of £1 per person which is collected from people in the room. The Forum is held on the first Thursday of months March, June, September and December, from 10:00 to 12:00.

For more information please contact RNIB.

RNIB services are free.

The only things that come at a cost are:

  • Products from their low-vision products shop
  • Their newsagents service (very low monthly cost, see their website for details)
  • Snacks at the Forum meetings – they ask for a very small donation to help cover costs

RNIB has made a video dispelling some misconceptions about what blind and partially sighted people can see:
