Read Easy Peterborough

Back to Support

Read Easy Peterborough helps adults learn to read or improve their reading skills. Coaches are volunteers and receive training to work with each reader on a one-to-one basis, usually meeting twice a week for half an hour. This service is free.

Hear Lorraine, who learned how to read, and Belinda, a volunteer coach, talk about their experience working together for three years, from why each of them came to Read Easy and what they got out of it.

What to expect

Read Easy is for anyone who struggles with their reading and would like to improve. Complete beginners are welcome, but so are those who struggle to read because of dyslexia or other difficulties.

Anyone can 'refer' a new reader, including the reader themselves. As long as the person wanting to learn to read knows about it they can be referred by anyone, such as a friend, relative, or an agency or community group. Just contact Chris on 07563 961 612 or [email protected].

When referred, the prospective reader will be assessed by a Read Easy expert to see how much, if anything, they can already read. They can then be paired with a coach and agree mutual times and place (usually a library - the map shows some of the locations where sessions are held once readers and coaches are paired up) for the teaching to take place.

Coaching is for half and hour, twice a week, for as long as it takes - from six months to two years. The coach is the same person every time and always exchanges a phone number where they can be contacted. They teach on a one-to-one basis, giving the reader and coach the chance to develop a bond.

The coach and reader usually meet just the two of them, but carers or other support people are always welcome.

Graduate readers have written how Read Easy has helped them, such as:

"Just thought I would let you know that I have finished the application form [for a new job position] and that’s the first time for a very long time that I’ve done it by myself.

Yes, I am very proud of myself and thank you so much for all your support and your help. If it was not for you I would not be where I am today."
