Resonance is a unique, safe space for creativity and expression set within vaults in the precinct of the Peterborough Cathedral. The space is made of several areas, including a painting workshop, a crafting area, a comfortable space to talk and relax, a jigsaw table and more.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it enables people to express and/or rekindle their creativity in a non-judgmental space
- people can work at their own rhythm, relax, and experiment
- all ages are welcome to come together on an equal basis

What to expect
Every one of us is creative, and this is a space where you’ll be supported in finding that place within you which is confident, soulful, light and rich.
Because of its situation and the uniqueness of the building, Resonance is a space that oozes with quietness and peace, calming the mind as you enter into it, and where time stops, taking people away from the stresses of their lives. It is a area where people of all ages can come together, create, and connect with others.
The largest space is dedicated to painting. There is a bench with a rainbow of colours of paint to choose from, and brushes. The walls are lined with brown paper. Sam will hang a large sheet of paper at an appropriate height on the wall for you, and then let you go with free reign. He follows a creativity principle of no instruction or critique, as these can limit the imagination. There are painting smocks to protect clothing to a degree, but it is best to wear clothes and shoes that can get paint on them.
There is another space with a table and colouring pens to use; another with sofas and origami paper which can be a place to relax or try some paper folding; and another space with a table and a jigsaw puzzle.
No equipment is needed, unless people want to just come enjoy a relaxed place and bring along their own activity materials, e.g. if someone wants to knit, or whatever else.
People need to book ahead by emailing Sam on [email protected], or ringing. You can discuss with him group size, requirements, and possibilities.
See their website or Facebook page for latest details on days and times of painting workshops. If you have a group wanting to come outside of these, contact them and Resonance will do its best to meet the needs of those wanting to attend.
More information
Resonance is located in the vaults area which are accessed via Becket’s Tea Rooms terrace, on the left when entering the gate that leads into the Cathedral precinct, and going down the stairs, which are low steps with a good handrail. Unfortunately, there is currently no wheelchair access. Toilets are available. See the video below on how to find it, and a walk through of the space.
The Queensgate Bus Station is close, and nearby car parking includes the Queensgate Shopping Centre, Car Haven car park, and St. Peter’s Road (all have a cost).
Tea, coffee, biscuits will always be free and available for participants.
Currently, Resonance is funded by the owner and therefore charges will apply to cover costs and ensure Resonance can stay open. It is hoped that in time funding will be obtained. The painting workshop has a set of fees which are different to those who just wish to use the space for crafting, relaxing, talking, etc.; see the fees and timetables on this page. However, those who are struggling financially should not hesitate to contact Sam, and everything will be done for them to be able to attend.
Sam also sells handmade chocolates.
