Oubaitori Karate Club

Back to Activities

Oubaitori Karate Club is a non-profit karate club in Peterborough. They offer martial arts training for children aged 4 years and older, teens, and adults of all levels of fitness and ability, for improving fitness or competing internationally and everything in between.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • you can improve your fitness; it doesn’t matter how fit you are currently, start training! And being physically active can improve your mental wellbeing
  • your confidence and self esteem are impacted by learning martial arts moves and self-defence
  • learning martial arts is very social! They have a lot of fun in their classes and help each other succeed.

“The best thing I have done in a long time was walk into OKC Dojo! I joined 7 months after having a baby, they were so encouraging, pushed me the exact right amount and the before and after care was amazing. Not only has this been great for my physical and mental health, I have made friends and built a support network. If you are thinking about starting martial arts don’t hesitate in joining OKC! You will not regret it.”

Head coach Sensai Matt Johnson asked students what their favourite part of training was – before and after:

What to expect

‘Oubaitori’ is a Japanese idiom that means each flower blooms in its own time, which can be interpreted as ‘enjoy your own journey and don’t compare yourself to others’.

Oubaitori Karate Club (OKC) primarily teach Shitoryu-Shukokai Karate, freestyle, sport and applied karate.

They offer martial arts training for children aged 4 years and older, and adults of all levels of fitness and ability, and offer discounts for multiple practitioners in the same household. Classes are inclusive, being ADHD and Autism friendly.

There are kids-only classes as well as all-age ones. Classes are in Werrington and Orton; find schedules on this page. All of the venues have car parks and toilets, and are wheelchair accessible.

Parking for:

  • Vivacity Werrington Leisure Centre is the Tesco shopping centre car park
  • the Herlington Community Centre is the shared carpark for the centre’s shops

Give them a call or email to let them know you’re coming and to make sure they can meet you on arrival, or just to discuss your needs. Alternatively, just turn up. Clothing: a t-shirt and trackies is fine, don’t wear anything that could hurt you or anybody else. They train barefoot. And bring water!
