Neighbourhood Watch Peterborough

Back to Activities

Neighbourhood Watch Peterborough is a network of co-ordinators and members, helping to build confident, happier communities by bringing neighbours together to support each other, socialise and tackle concerns around crime and anti-social behaviour.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Members feel happier and more secure because they know more of their neighbours and can look out for each other.
  • The Neighbourhood Watch banner gives people more confidence to be involved; doing so reduces loneliness and isolation, offering opportunities for social interaction, leading to improved morale and self-confidence.
  • It improves recovery from crime and helps people to feel safer in their own homes, knowing that the community around them is supportive.

A resident of Thorney said ‘It’s great that I now know all my neighbours to speak to, thanks to Neighbourhood Watch.’

What to expect

As a member of neighbourhood watch, you will be part of a community that watches out for each other. Using a variety of communication methods, you’ll be made aware of what’s going on locally to prevent crime and to support those who fall victim to it. The expectation is that you, in turn, will play a small part in being aware of what’s going on in your community and looking out for your neighbours, raising any concerns with your local co-ordinator.

Co-ordinator roles involve some admin in making these things happen. If you decide to be a co-ordination in your area, you’ll be a point of call for those with concerns and take appropriate action. You’ll be responsible for maintaining a list of members and cascading information to members from the police and other agencies.

Both co-ordinators and members can get involved in crime prevention measures such as home security and nurturing the community to be active in how they deal with things such as suspicious behaviour. There are resources available both locally and from the national network to help.

More information

Neighbourhood Watch Peterborough is a network of local NW groups. You can go along to one of their co-ordinators’ meetings to find out how to get involved with existing groups. If your area isn’t already covered, they’ll help you understand what is involved and support you in getting it off the ground. Peterborough NW work closely with the local constabulary and are instrumental in spreading information on any new initiatives to tackle crime, training on topics such as scamming, and can direct local co-ordinators to other resources both specific to Peterborough and via the National Neighbourhood Watch framework. If you would like to learn more, the national website has lots of resources to help you feel happier and more secure in your community.
