G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides

Back to Activities

G-Whizz offers free tandem bike rides to a range of cyclists. With standard and semi-recumbent tandems, on-road rides are available to able-bodied, visually impaired and limited-mobility cyclists. Typical rides range from one to several hours, depending how keen you are!

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Physical exercise releases feel-good hormones and can increase energy levels
  • Fresh air and being out in nature is good for your mental as well as physical health
  • The rides and cafe stops give you an opportunity to meet and chat with new people

What to expect

Did you used to enjoy long cycle rides, but had to give them up due to a loss of mobility or a disability? If you are keen to get back into cycling, then Graham or one of the team at G-Whizz could be your tandem cycling partner. These cycle rides allow you to take in the beautiful countryside while having a chat with your cycling partner, made easier by the fact that both of you are on the same bike.

Some past and current tandem stokers (that would be you - pedalling but not controlling the cycle) have visual impairments/blindness, limited use of an arm due to stroke, inability to sit comfortably on a standard bicycle seat due to surgery, arthritis in hands, and more. As long as your balance is OK, you have enough mobility to get on and off a bike, and are physically able to take part, Graham is happy to talk to you about the possibilities.

Depending on your needs, there are two types of tandem cycles to choose from: the standard where you sit on the back seat and pedal within your abilities, or a bike with a semi-recumbent seat at the front for those who cannot manage the standard seat or find it too uncomfortable. On both bikes, the lead rider (pilot) steers and has control of the bike so you don’t need to navigate. See what it looks like being a stoker on the front of the semi-recumbent tandem in the video.

Graham will chat with you about your needs and abilities, and what length of rides you are interested in – rides will typically last at least an hour and can be several hours. Routes will be chosen for their safety as well as the scenery, and generally include at least one stop at a café or pub to refuel. Wear warm, comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes, and bring a bottle of water. If you have a cycling helmet, bring that, but if not then Graham has a few different sizes to select from.

More information

Contact Graham to talk about what cycling experience you have had and what limitations you have. In order to take part, you will need to make your own way to Sawtry as G-Whizz can’t come to you (the bikes are not easy to transport).

If the weather is inclement, the team will discuss with you about rescheduling.

Graham and the team are DBS-checked, insured and very experienced cyclists who would be delighted to share their passion for cycling with you!

If you want to see more photos, videos, and route maps, click on the G-Whizz Facebook button in the Contact section.

You can contact G-Whizz yourself, or on behalf of a loved one or friend (with their permission). Professionals can refer clients.

Taking part in the rides is free.

Cyclists are expected to pay for their own refreshments if a ride includes a café or coffee stop.

Graham demonstrates how the semi-recumbent tandem works by giving his 80+ year old mum a ride!
