The Chinese Community in Peterborough is an award-winning community organisation founded in 2013 by to support the Chinese community and wider communities across Peterborough through wellbeing, cultural inclusion, social connection, and community cohesion.

The organisation was awarded the prestigious, the highest honour for voluntary groups in the UK, recognising its outstanding contribution to communities.

Over the past decade, the organisation has supported thousands of people through wellbeing activities, cultural events, volunteering, community engagement, and health initiatives.

The organisation works closely with local partners including healthcare providers, community organisations, parks, education settings, and voluntary sector networks to promote:

  • Mental and physical wellbeing
  • Reducing isolation
  • Healthy ageing and fall prevention
  • Recovery and rehabilitation support
  • Cross-cultural understanding and social harmony
  • Accessible physical activity for all abilities and backgrounds

What to expect

The Chinese Community in Peterborough organises a range of events from social gatherings to support sessions on health and wellbeing. Some examples are:

  • Activities and social get-togethers including wellbeing walks
  • Support sessions with local services, district council and police
  • English lessons

They also organise some events and activities for everyone, including Chinese New Year celebrations.

A major area of work is Tai Chi for wellbeing, which has reached over 20,000 people through online and in-person sessions, demonstrations, workshops, and community events. They hold Tai Chi sessions for everyone, all ages and abilities, and suitable for beginners. Current venues include Ferry Meadows Park on Saturday mornings in warmer weather and indoor sessions in community centres in the winter. Tai Chi is a gentle, low-impact exercise suitable for many people, including beginners, older adults, and those returning to physical activity. Participants often report benefits including:
