This is a weekly group of calm and crafting. You can try new crafts, or bring your knitting - everyone is welcome, no previous experience required, and all crafts are free.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- it helps reduce stress and promotes relaxation
- it builds confidence and a sense of achievement - making something with your hands, no matter how simple, can boost self-esteem
- it encourages social connection, offering a welcoming space to spend time with others, share conversation, and feel part of a group
"I finally learned to crochet! Thanks to the patient support of someone at the group, I'm now crocheting with a little confidence."

Creative activities help people slow down, focus on the present moment, and take a break from daily worries. The repetitive, gentle nature of crafting can be calming and supportive for mental health.
What to expect?
Calm & Craft is open to anyone looking for a gentle, creative activity in a relaxed and supportive space. You don’t need to be artistic, confident, or experienced, just willing to give it a try. Calm & Craft is completely beginner‑friendly. All activities are simple and easy to follow, and you can choose something that suits your comfort level.
Each session offers simple, calming craft activities such as drawing, colouring, card‑making, embroidery, crochet, or seasonal crafts. Materials are provided, and you’re welcome to work at your own pace. The focus is on wellbeing, not on producing perfect artwork.
A friendly member of the team will welcome you, explain what’s happening that day, and show you where to sit. You’ll be introduced to the group (only if you want) and given everything you need to get started.
Sessions are led by a member of Cross Keys Homes (CKH) staff, but are open to everyone, not just CKH residents. They guide the activity, answer questions, and help you settle in. If you feel nervous about attending for the first time, you can contact them beforehand for reassurance or information.
No need to book, but on arrival, you'll be asked to sign in for safety and attendance records. Sessions are held on weekdays; you can find the times and days on the CKH social groups webpage.
Sessions usually last for two hours, and you are welcome to come for all or part of the session. Hot and cold drinks are available throughout the session, and you are welcome to bring your own.
More information
Who attends?
Attendees are a small, friendly mix of adults who come for creativity, company, relaxation, or support with their wellbeing. People attend on their own, with a friend, or with a support worker - everyone's welcome to get involved or just watch for a bit.
Calm & Craft is open to everyone. No referral is needed, and you don’t have to be receiving support services to attend. Some sessions may be recommended by social prescribers or support workers, but self‑referrals are always welcome, you can just turn up.
Where can I park?
Parking is easy, there is a large free car park at Redpoll and bus stops are close by; they're only a few minutes walk from Bretton Centre.
Is it accessible for people with disabilities?
Calm & Craft aims to be inclusive and accessible. The venue is step‑free. Accessible toilets and baby‑changing facilities are provided. Pushchairs are welcome. Assistance dogs are welcome. Please let them know ahead of time if you have mobility, hearing, or other access needs so they can support you as best they can.
Do I need to bring or wear anything in particular?
All craft materials are provided. Just wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind potentially getting a little messy. No special footwear or equipment is needed.

Calm & Craft is completely free and open to the whole community, not just CKH residents.
